First Lights is a remarkable light show commissioned by the Fremantle Biennale. This large-scale contemporary art form involves nearly 200 drones with powerful LED lights choreographed through specialist 3D animation techniques. Led by Traditional Owners and Aboriginal artists, multiple shows will be presented across WA to share ancient knowledge, living stories, and history specific to each location.
This year's First Lights: Cowaramup show, led by Wadandi elders Mitchella Hutchins and Vivian Brockman Webb and co-presented by The Farm Margaret River, transformed Cowaramup Bay on the 20th of May into a portal to the Dreamtime. The shores in Gracetown were illuminated by a spectacular light and sound display, bringing ancient stories transcending space and time to life. This experience of significant depth and scale connects diverse audiences to local stories within a major contemporary art event. First Lights provides a meaningful opportunity to share little-known traditional knowledge, stories, and histories that aim to inspire celebration and unite the communities.
